July is B Corp month! This year the theme is all about fostering connections and encouraging collaborations between B Corps to celebrate ‘Better Together, for a Better World’.

In honour of this, we’ve collaborated with Ben & Jerry’s and 4 Pines to share how we are fostering connections, why B Corps are important and how you can support B Corps on a daily basis!

A B Corp (or B Corporations) is a new kind of business that balance purpose and profit, as they believe in contributing to a better world. Businesses that are certified B Corps make decisions that make a positive impact across their workers, customers, suppliers, community, and the environment.

Some huge companies that are B Corps that you would know of are Ben & Jerry’s Homemade, Patagonia, and The Body Shop.

In 2020, now more than ever, there’s a need to support each other as a community. As we navigate our way through extraordinary times, we can show the world that business as a force for good has never been more important. It’s incredible what we can achieve when we come together.

As a B Corp, how are you listening, learning and supporting?

At Compass Studio, we are committed to collaborating and giving a voice to others in our community. During COVID-19, we launched an Instagram series called ‘Socially Closer’, where we highlighted our favourite thinkers and creatives so that we all felt a little closer during self-isolation. We are widening our focus and working to represent diversity in these voices.

We are always on the lookout for contributors to our Compass Journal, where we publish two blogs a month. This is just another way for us to support others and elevate their voices on our channels, and for our audience to hear and learn from these creative and talented people.

How to easily support b-corps on a daily basis

You’d be surprised at how easy it is to support B Corps every day! Supporting a B Corp doesn’t mean that you have to exclusively buy products and services from B Corps as we know that’s not sustainable or achievable for all. But, what you can do is to show B Corp businesses love and support on social media. Follow them, comment on their posts & better yet share their products with your followers.

If you are looking to buy products from B Corp businesses, you can check out this directory. There’s everything from ice cream and beer, to clothes and bedding!

Why do we need more b-corps in the world

B Corps are united across the world by the mission to use businesses as a force for good. They are legally committed to consider the impact of their decisions on things like workers, customers, suppliers, community and the environment. There are currently over 2,500 Certified B Corporations in more than 50 countries around the world, and we hope that this number continues to increase. Now more than ever, businesses need to do more than just make profit, they need to contribute to making the world a better place for all.

As a B Corp, how are you listening, learning and supporting?

At Ben & Jerry’s, the foundation of our social mission work comes from building close relationships with our NGO partners and allies, and listening and learning from them. With all our social mission work, we are guided by our partners and their community to help to build and grow the movement, raising awareness of their campaigns and encouraging our fans to get involved.

How to easily support b-corps on a daily basis

It’s actually super easy – especially because all of us are consumers in one way or another. Start with being curious – figure out where you spend money regularly and look for alternatives (B Corp or otherwise!) that support the kind of world you want to see. Do the research and commit where you can to using your dough for good.

This also applies to your working life. Your company will be spending money on goods and services, so rather than your usual suppliers there may be B Corp options you could try out. It may be working with B Corp consultancies and agencies like Compass, or it can be as simple as grabbing your daily team coffee at a B Corp like Pablo & Rustys. Or perhaps your company would be interested in trying to become B Corp accredited and join the movement!

Why do we need more b-corps in the world

I think there is a shift in thinking happening where people want to be part of something that contributes to good in a tangible way. Rethinking the way we do business and equally, where we spend our money, is key to this. It might seem small, but every dollar spent on a business that strives to make the world a better place contributes to creating a world that values fairness, human dignity and the health of the planet over greed and profit. That is definitely something we get excited about!

As a B Corp, how are you listening, learning and supporting?

At 4 Pines we listen to our consumers, industry and staff to better understand the needs of our community. We learn from our mistakes, our peers and one another and support other B Corps, charities, community groups and are staff to do good.

How to easily support a B Corp on a daily basis

You can support a B Corp in many ways! Did you know that B Lab is a registered charity and not for profit? You can donate to them to help them continue the work they do to support B Corps here in Australia and New Zealand. Another great way to support B Corps is by visiting the B Corp website and looking at the Directory for brands and services that you may need and actively choosing to patron a B Corp. There are so many B Corps in Australia from ice cream brands like Ben and Jerry’s to Marketing and PR Agency’s like Compass and even a primary healthcare group, called Osana!

Why do we need more B Corps?

People power is so important! This is the crux of why we need more B Corps in the world. People get things done, start movements and shake up the status quo. By supporting a B Corp you are actively supporting a business that is working towards  environmental and social change. Brands and organisations also have a lot of power and as consumers we spend a considerable amount of time interacting with brands and consuming their marketing material, products and services. As our world struggles with many challenges we will need more companies willing to put their businesses behind doing good. It is just not a nice thing to do, but also the right thing to do!
