Why we’ve gone carbon neutral in 2021

Why we’ve gone carbon neutral in 2021

This year, we knew there was something important we had to do; for our community, for wildlife, for our planet, for our team. This year was the year we would become carbon neutral.

Being an impact-led business, and advocates of doing #BetterBusiness, offsetting 100% of our carbon emissions makes sense. As a Certified B Corp, we know that putting our business’ values into action is not only necessary, but achievable. We believe that businesses have a responsibility to do right by people and planet. So we’re always looking at how we can challenge ourselves to do better.

So as of April 1,  we’re supporting the  planting of biodiverse forests across Australia and New Zealand with the leading, not-for-profit organisation, Greenfleet. As of April 1, Compass Studio is carbon neutral.

“It has been a big goal of ours since we started”, says Co Founder + Co Director Luke Dean-Weymark. “We are so thrilled to be achieving this early in 2021 with GreenFleet Australia, one of our past North Initiative partners.”

At Compass, many of our business decisions are guided by our deep respect and appreciation for the natural environment. Greenfleet has helped countless businesses across Australia and New Zealand to reduce their environmental impact, with over 500 native, local forests actively capturing carbon. Furthermore, we chose to offset our carbon with Greenfleet because their forests don’t just absorb carbon from the atmosphere, they also improve soil and water quality and provide a vital habitat for native wildlife. This means we’re not only neutralising our carbon emissions, we’re also helping to restore biodiversity to the incredible planet we call home.

“At Compass, we’re always looking to push ourselves to be better in our ethics, sustainability and impact. This means taking the time internally to get certified, accredited and reduce our footprint via measurable and third-party auditing bodies.”

And while many offsetting organisations encourage businesses to support the planting of trees offshore, Greenfleet focuses on local, native forests, meaning that we are able to contribute to the regeneration of the Australian environment. Further to this, many forests abroad aren’t protected, and are often felled for palm oil once they achieve maturity. What sets Greenfleet apart is that their forests are legally protected for a minimum of one hundred years. This level of transparency and integrity reflects our own values at Compass and ensures our business is having a positive, long lasting impact on the world around us.

“The next goal for us in terms of carbon emissions is to move further beyond carbon neutrality, as we aren’t truly making a positive impact until we do. I challenge all impact-led businesses to keep lifting the bar with us.”

This practical, environment-based initiative, led by Greenfleet, has already offset 3.5 million tonnes of carbon; the equivalent of taking 756 cars off the road for one year!

We’re so proud to be taking this step as a business, and as people striving for a better future.
